The designated stitches will be in parenthesis after the word “over” in the written instructions. You will see a couple different variations in this pattern like cl over(4dc, sc, 4dc), cl over(4dc), and cl over(4dc, sc).

For the cl over(4dc, sc, 4dc) you will

  1. Yo, insert your hook into the first dc st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loop.
  2. Yo, insert your hook into the second dc st, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops.

Tips for making this pattern

  • Pay attention at the end of each round if you are to turn the work or not.
  • Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to make it easier to know where to slip stitch to.
  • Use the crochet charts to visually see where the stitches are to be placed if you are having any difficulty with the placements.
  • When you are changing yarn colours I recommend tying off the yarn and joining the new colour to one of the other three sides of the square. This help with the overall look not having the seam being up the middle of the blanket all on one side.
  • This pattern uses ( ), [ ], and { } to indicate instructions that are either grouped together to be worked into one st, or that will be repeated a certain number of times. the { } brackets are always used to instruct you on what section you will repeat for the other sides of the square as you work around.
  • Play around with your colour selection for this blanket. Depending on what you pick you can bring out the Heirloom feel even more in this crochet pattern.

Do I need to know how to read crochet charts to make this Heirloom Crochet pattern?

I have been focusing on making my patterns more accessible by including both written instructions as well as crochet charts on any new patterns. Prefer written instructions but like to have the visual crochet chart to clarify the stitch placement? Don’t know how to read stitch charts but want to learn by doing patterns that have both written instructions and charts? Prefer working from a crochet chart as you find the symbols easier to follow than a written pattern? This pattern includes the full pattern in written form and crochet charts showing the 3 different pattern repeats.
